Eurogypsum and Aggregates Europe – UEPG organised a Late Summer Reception in Brussels on Wednesday, 25 September 2024. The event, entitled “National Nature Restoration Plans: What Role for the Non-Energy Extractive Industries?“, focused on the implementation of the Nature Restoration Law and the role of extractive industries.
As EU member states develop plans to restore nature, the non-energy extractive industries can play a vital role in drafting and implementing these plans. The restoration of temporarily used land is an integral part of the supply of essential raw materials.
The event featured an engaging panel debate with key representatives from the European Commission, the European Parliament, environmental NGOs and industry leaders.
The speakers agreed that extractive activities have an impact on nature but can also positively contribute to biodiversity, through existing legal requirements and industry practices during and after extractive operations. They expressed their commitment to cooperation in order to deliver on nature restoration, while supplying Europe with essential raw materials. It was pointed out that the Nature Restoration Law offers a framework allowing for the participation of economic actors such as extractive industries in its implementation.
As outlined in the conclusions, extractive industries need to be proactive in this regard; we require a radical collaboration with NGOs, scientists and regulators, as well as pragmatic solutions to achieve the regulation’s goals.
